Coach James joined Arizona Tritons coaching staff in March 2026, bringing a strong foundation from his NCAA Division I swimming career at California State University, Bakersfield (CSUB) and a deep background in competitive backstroke and freestyle racing.
As a collegiate athlete with the Roadrunners, Skuse competed in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC), where he developed into a reliable scorer and relay contributor. He earned Academic All-WAC honors while balancing a kinesiology-focused academic path, reflecting both competitive discipline and strong academic commitment. In the pool, he posted standout performances in the 100 and 200 backstroke, including a 12th-place finish in the 200 backstroke at the WAC Championships with a personal best of 1:48.96, and a 14th-place finish in the 100 backstroke (50.58).
Skuse also contributed to relay success and school-record performances during his career, helping set marks in both the 200 and 400 freestyle relays at the high school level and continuing to build relay value at the collegiate level. In dual meet competition, he earned event wins and podium finishes, including a 100 backstroke victory and strong performances against non-conference opponents such as UC Santa Cruz.
Before college, Skuse swam for Clovis High School in New Mexico, where he was a team MVP, National Honor Society member, and scholarship recipient. He helped contribute to multiple record-setting relay performances and a strong state-meet presence, demonstrating early leadership in high-performance environments.
As a coach with Arizona Tritons, Skuse applies his NCAA experience to athlete development with an emphasis on technical precision, race strategy, and confidence under pressure. His coaching approach blends stroke efficiency work with performance-driven training habits, helping swimmers progress from age-group development to higher-level competition pathways.
